BASSETERRE, Saint Kitts, September 01, 2025 (SKNIS) – Today, September 01, 2025, marked a historic and emotional moment in the life of the Saddlers community, as the Saddlers Secondary School (SSS) was officially renamed in honour of The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, former prime minister and longstanding Parliamentary Representative for Saint Christopher Six.
During the official renaming ceremony at the school’s campus, Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, delivered a heartfelt address, celebrating the profound legacy of Dr. Douglas, describing him as a statesman whose life has been devoted to public service and national development.
“It is with deep respect that I stand before you today to celebrate a truly historic occasion,” Prime Minister Drew stated. “The naming of Saddlers Secondary School in honour of one of our nation’s most dedicated sons… carries with it a great sense of pride.”

Dr. Douglas, who served as the second Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis for two decades, was lauded for his visionary leadership, especially in education. It was under his administration that the idea for the Saddlers Secondary School was conceived, constructed, and opened — a move that transformed access to secondary education for the children of Saddlers and surrounding communities.
“Saddlers Secondary School was not just another building project,” the prime minister emphasised. “It was a bold statement that every child, no matter their community or circumstance, deserves access to quality education close to home.”
Dr. Douglas continues to serve as the elected Member of Parliament for over 30 years. Prime Minister Drew said Monday’s renaming is a symbolic and enduring recognition of a life committed to service — from teacher and medical doctor, to national leader.
“To name this school after Dr. Douglas is to acknowledge more than his title or years in office. It is to recognise his vision of education as a pathway to empowerment. It is to celebrate his conviction that progress must reach every corner of our Federation,” said Prime Minister Drew.
The honourable prime minister extended congratulations to Dr. Douglas on behalf of the nation, expressing hope that this recognition will inspire generations to come.
“May this recognition inspire present and future generations to serve with the same dedication, courage, and love for country,” Prime Minister Drew concluded.
The renaming ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Her Excellency the Governor General Dame Marcella Liburd, Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic and consular corps, staff and students, as well as members of the Saddlers community.
