Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, October 6, 2025 – The Department of Environment reaffirmed its commitment to its most valuable asset, its staff, during its annual Staff Development Day held on Friday, October 3, at the Shadwell Great House. The day-long event, running from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, focused on two critical pillars of a thriving workforce: mental and financial wellness, moving beyond traditional technical training.
The morning session set an impactful tone with a compelling presentation from Ms. Nadia Rawlins, a Counsellor, on “Mental Health and Workplace Wellness.” Ms. Rawlins emphasized the profound connection between an employee’s psychological state and their professional performance. She explained that mental health is not a peripheral concern but a core component of organizational success. When employees are equipped to manage work-related stress, they demonstrate greater focus, enhanced creativity, and improved interpersonal communication. The session provided practical strategies for navigating workplace pressures, positioning good mental health as a direct catalyst for improved productivity and a more harmonious work environment.

The second session shifted the focus to securing the future with a presentation on “Financial Planning and Retirement Security,” led by representatives from Sargico Insurance: Mr. Marvin Herbert, Ms. Janal Casimir, and Ms. Andrea Dias. They highlighted how financial stress can significantly distract employees at work, affecting both concentration and morale. The speakers stressed that financial choices are often the root of financial difficulties. Miss Jamal Casimir reinforced this message, stating, “We should start making the right financial choices at a young age,” adding, “We often make poor financial decisions when we are young, not realizing how they may affect us later in life.” However, it is never too late to start practicing sustainable financial practices and contribute to a more secure future she concluded
By empowering staff with the knowledge to plan for retirement and manage their finances effectively, the Department is directly investing in their peace of mind. A confident employee regarding their financial future is less distracted, more engaged, and demonstrates a greater long-term commitment to their role.
By aligning the topics of mental and financial wellness with staff development, the Department of Environment has taken a holistic and forward-thinking approach. The event underscored that true professional development encompasses not just enhanced technical skills but also the cultivation of a resilient, focused, and secure workforce. Investing in the whole person both their present well-being and future stability is a proven strategy for building a more productive, loyal, and developed team, ready to address today’s and tomorrow’s environmental challenges.
