Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 12th, 2026 (PMO) – Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew today, February 12th, announced that skilled inmates from His Majesty’s Prison will lead major renovation and refurbishment works at the Cardin Home as part of a government initiative to improve facilities for the Federation’s most vulnerable citizens.
The Cardin Home, which has not undergone significant refurbishment in many years, is slated for substantial upgrades during the 2026 fiscal year.
Speaking during his opening statements in the National Assembly, the Prime Minister confirmed that the project will be undertaken in partnership with Ross University and other stakeholders.
“We have very skilled people at His Majesty’s Prison. They will be dedicated to renovating, refurbish, and add to the Cardin Home,” Dr. Drew stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the initiative serves a dual purpose, enhancing living conditions at the facility while providing inmates with meaningful opportunities to apply and strengthen their trade skills.
“This will be a very useful deployment of skill and time. Even though the residents are among the most vulnerable, they deserve proper facilities and dignity.”
Dr. Drew noted that the project forms part of the Government’s broader commitment to social protection, rehabilitation, and national development, ensuring that progress reaches every segment of society.
“We know the state of the facility,” he acknowledged. “And this year, we are determined that it will receive the significant improvements it requires.”
The Government will provide additional details on the scope and timeline of the renovations in the coming weeks.
