Basseterre, Saint Kitts, March 31, 2026 (SKNIS): Consumers in Saint Kitts are urged to support the government’s major investment to enhance and expand the water infrastructure by reducing the massive $28 million owed to the Water Services Department in arrears.
The startling figure was shared by the Honourable Konris Maynard, Minister with responsibility for water, while he addressed the National Assembly on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. He noted that the low cost billed to households for water supply is a key factor in some delayed payments.
“People say, ‘Oh water is cheap. That’s $20, Oh I will pay it later,” he said.
The total then accumulates for months, and some find it difficult to zero balance the arrears on what is the cheapest water rates in the region, according to Minister Maynard.
To help consumers with financial difficulties, the Water Services Department has created flexible payment plans. Persons are strongly encouraged to contact or visit the department to develop payment schedules, as accounts in arrears are subject to service interruption after 90 days. However, payments of any amount will keep accounts active while reducing the balance.
“That is empathetic,” said Minister Maynard. “It is not a case where people are going after you. If you have challenges, please present yourselves, indicate your challenges, and the Water Services Department will develop a payment schedule for you.”
The government continues to move forward in its efforts to restore 24/7 water supply after years of neglect and poor planning by the previous administration. Since 2022, millions have been spent on the construction and commissioning of two desalination plants, establishing a new well in Cayon, constructing new water storage facilities, and replacing underground pipes. Currently, exploratory drilling is taking place in Saddlers at a highly probable well site.
