Basseterre, Saint Kitts, April 02, 2926 (SKNIS): Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, congratulated a group of newly trained customs officers on their successful completion of the Junior Officers Basic Training Course conducted by the Caribbean Customs Law Enforcement Council (CCLEC), while urging them to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism.
The officers received their certificates during a graduation ceremony held today, April 02, 2026, at the National Heroes Park, marking an important milestone in their careers in customs enforcement.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Drew praised the officers for their commitment and the Customs and Excise Department for demonstrating strong capacity in delivering and supporting high-quality training.
“As small countries, territories within the region, it is best if we bring all of our resources together because together we will have more and together we will reach further,” Dr. Drew stated. “And this course demonstrates that and is built on that principle that we espoused as Caribbean people.”

While acknowledging the officers’ technical achievements, Prime Minister Drew placed strong emphasis on character, values, and personal responsibility as the true test of their success in the field.
“There are people who are going to call you and offer you big money… and ask you to compromise the law and your integrity for personal gain,” he warned. “That will happen to you.”
He further cautioned that challenges may also come in more subtle forms, including emotional appeals or personal biases that could influence decision-making.
“All these, point… not to the technical aspect of the course… but to your own personal development. What are your values, your core values?” he said. “Those are the principles that will definitely determine if you become a successful customs officer or you become one of those who is known to be compromised.”
Prime Minister Drew encouraged the graduates to remain steadfast in upholding fairness and discipline in every aspect of their duties, regardless of circumstance.
“What I’ve seen here tells me that you have started off on an excellent footing,” the prime minister said. “Stay true to yourself and to your principles and have the courage to stand up when it is challenging.”
The prime minister’s remarks reinforced the critical role customs officers play in safeguarding national borders and maintaining public trust, emphasising that integrity and discipline must remain at the core of their service.
