Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 09, 2016 (SKNIS):  The Discussions for Prosperity Town Hall Meetings continued on Thursday, September 08, when Government officials journeyed to the McKnight Community Centre to update the residents on matters of the Government, as well as engage them in meaningful consultations.

In taking the matters to the people, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Minister of Public Infrastructure, assured residents that a few facilities in the area would be upgraded. One such facility is the apartment complex at the Gardens, also known as Gardens Housing. He appealed to the residents who are behind on their rent to make provisions catch up on payments, as monies are needed to repair the houses.

“It has already been decided that those apartments will be retrofitted in terms of the inner fittings,” said Minister Liburd. “They will replace the tiles, the cupboards and the entire building will be repainted.”

Minister Liburd also spoke to the resurfacing of the hardcourt in the area.

“I have received the quotation to resurface the court next door for netball,” said the Minister of Public Infrastructure, while adding that by mid-October the children of Irish Town School won’t have to walk all the way to Warner Park if they want to play netball. Minister Liburd said that the expected cost of the repairs is EC$ 35,000.

He also addressed the water and sewage treatment plant, as well as the roads in the area.

“I am advised that a brand new sewage treatment plant costing some EC$200,000 will be installed before the end of this year,” said Minister Liburd. “From a public infrastructure perspective, the Irish Town and Fortlands areas have been subject to erosion and we in the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, come next fiscal year 2017 we intend to construct a retaining wall structure including rock armoring to stabilize the coastline and prevent further erosion which is threatening the road infrastructure and the properties in the area.”

The Public Infrastructure Minister noted that protecting the lives of the people is of great importance to the Government. He noted that other areas would be looked at, seeing that the Government is committed to the safety and security of the country’s number one resource, its people.
