Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 17, 2016 (SKNIS): As part of the activities for Youth Month 2016, an island wide bike ride was organised to provide youth an avenue not only to get out and exercise, but to engage in constructive activity.

The bike ride, which was held on November 13, saw the participation of not only youth, but for the young at heart.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth, Honourable Shawn Richards, said that the activity, was not only fun for all, but had additional benefits.

“I think it was a fun activity, but apart from that, we provided young persons in particular with the opportunity to showcase their biking skills, to get them involved in some physical activity and also to bring more awareness to the Youth Department and to our young people here in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the minister.

The minister said that he decided to participate and he enjoyed himself.

“I actually surprised myself because apart from the designated rest stops, I actually rode the bike the entire journey,” said Minister Richards. “I thought I may have had to stop here and there or maybe even have to jump on the truck or walk with the bike in my hand, but none of that took place. So, I am actually proud of myself and all of the young persons who decided to participate.

Minister Richards reflected on the theme for this year’s youth month “Preparing for the Future: Investing in our Youth,” stating that the youth of the Federation are truly the future.

“I want to say to all of the young people in St. Kitts and Nevis that the future is about you, so you must come out and you must partake not just in the activities earmarked for Youth Month but you must let your voices be heard,” said the minister.

The minister said that the department rented bikes for persons who wanted to participate but didn’t have one.

The youth minister extended thanks to all of the different persons who participated in the bike ride and who will be participating in the other activities that are planned for the month.

Some upcoming events include Youth Parliament, Youth Awards Ceremony, symposiums and consultations for the National Youth Policy.
