They will speak about the endangered turtles that nest on beaches in St. Kitts, the beautiful, yet destructive lionfish and some of the other maritime creatures that live in our waters.  The children at the August 5th Heritage House session will also be treated to a performance by the Anjolique Dance Company, that uses dance to raise awareness of environmental conservation.

The Saturday morning Heritage House storytelling sessions are being held from 9:30 – 11:00 inside the National Museum in a room that is transformed into a fun, storytelling space.  The series – designed for children aged 6-12 years old, runs until August 26th.

Getting underway on July 8th, the series so far has featured storytellers Schenidman Warner, Jihan Williams, Troy “Spuddy” Hendrickson and Deputy Prime Minsiter Shawn Richards.

Next weekend (August 12th) Child Care Specialist Jaya Relwani and her team of volunteer scribes, will guide the children through the creative process to come up with their own story, set in St. Kitts.  They will work together to create the tale, which will be presented during the closing ceremony on the last day of the series (August 26th).

On August 19th, National Trust Patron, the Governor General His Excellency Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, QC will share with the children, the story of Betto Douglas, an enslaved woman who took on the court system in the 1820s.

On the final weekend, composer, musician and storyteller Creighton Pencheon, will tell the tale of Marcus of the Woods, who led a band of enslaved Africans who had escaped captivity and roamed the forests of St. Kitts in the 19th century.  On that day, story-time will be followed by refreshments and a brief closing ceremony in the archway of the historic National Trust building.

Thanks to our partners Caribbean Journey Masters, Caribbean Reads, Caribelle Batik, the Department of Youth, Gary’s Fruits and Flowers, Social Security and a number of private patrons, we are able to offer the entire series free of cost.  Space for this weekend however, is limited, so interested persons must register children by Friday at 5:00 pm.

We regret that we will be unable to accept late registrations, so to avoid disappointment, please get in touch as soon as possible!
