Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 20, 2018 (SKNIS):  The St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services (SKNFRS) Annual Summer Safety Programme, which is now in its 16th year, climaxed on a high note as hundreds of children were exposed to topics such as fire, water and traffic safety; crime and violence; and disaster preparedness.

Lesroy Caines, Fire Sub Station Officer (FSSO) and Programme Coordinator, congratulated the children who have been promoted to junior fire fighters, noting that the programme has evolved over the years.

“Since the inception of the programme there has been a significant decrease in fires caused by children, death of children caused by fires, false alarms done by children, death of children caused by drowning, and traffic incidents involving children,” said the FSSO. “The facts are clear and it is certainly evident that the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services will continue to host this remarkable Summer Safety Programme for another 16 years and beyond.”

Curtis Martin, General Manager of Carib Supply, echoed his organization’s continued commitment to partner with SKNFRS, and commended it for the work it is doing with the nation’s children.

“We humbly salute the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services in moulding the young minds and lives of our Federation. It is a good place to start, given the fact that many take fire and safety in general for granted. There is often a big alarm when a major incident occurs but not a consistent effort to ensure that safety first is safety always,” said the general manager. “We at Carib Supply can only encourage this kind of initiative and look forward to a continued proud sponsorship of the programme and its invaluable offerings.”

Carib Supply is the sole supplier of fire extinguishers in St. Kitts and Nevis. They are also responsible for replacing and replenishing fire extinguishers.

Garfield Hodge, Fire Station Officer (FSO), acknowledged pass graduates of the programme who show keen interest in attending the camp each year.

“This is testament of the fact that our programme is very impacting, very intriguing, very exciting and it is very engaging. And so, year after year, though they would have graduated they still return.”

The St. Kitts leg of the camp ran from July 16 to 20, 2018, and catered to children between the ages of five to 12 years. It was held simultaneously at the Basseterre Fire Station, Edgar T. Morris Primary School in Tabernacle, and Sandy Point Primary School. The Nevis leg of the programme ran from July 9-13 at the Jessup’s Community Centre. The camp in Nevis culminated with a march in commemoration of the 15th Anniversary of the programme there. A combined total of 482 children participated in the programme.
