Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 5, 2021 (SKNIS): The Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Post and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Republic of China (Taiwan), held a signing ceremony for implementing arrangements for the Renewable Energy Dispatch Special Project.

Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Michael C.H. Lin (LIN, Chau Horng), said that “St. Kitts and Nevis has great potential for renewable energy such as wind power, solar power and the geothermal energies,” during the signing ceremony.

“The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has met impressive achievements in promoting renewable energy development and is continuing to enhance the renewable energy generation as we have also been committed to boosting the renewable energy capacity of Taiwan,” Ambassador Lin said.

“It is our great pleasure to have the opportunity to share Taiwan’s experience and contribute to the renewable energy development in St. Kitts and Nevis,” he added.

Minister with responsibility for Public Infrastructure, Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Shawn Richards said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for this initiative and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for facilitating the process along with my ministry that has brought us to this milestone, the signing of the agreement.”

“Under this initiative, the Republic of China (Taiwan) will assist the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in the development of renewable energy and its human resources in this area,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richards.

The Minister of Public Infrastructure said that his research has shown that the Republic of China (Taiwan) has adopted policies, enacted laws, and approved legislation to support renewable energy development.

“For example, the government passed the Renewable Energy Development Act (REDA) in 2009 for the purpose of promoting energy diversification, especially through renewable energy technologies, improving energy infrastructure and environmental quality, reducing greenhouse gas emission and enhancing the sustainable development of Taiwan,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richards.
