Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 08, 2021 (SKNIS): On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, most schools across St. Kitts reopened their doors to students for the 2021-2022 school year. Minister of Education the Hon. Jonel Powell visited the Cayon High School to encourage teachers and students to strive for academic success while ensuring the full support of the Ministry of Education.

“Guys this year is going to be a rollercoaster school year. I’m pretty sure all of you know what is facing us in terms of COVID-19, and that is why you are standing here wearing facemasks and having to go through all these protocols in order to get into the school. But I think if you really listen to the theme (Safeguarding me, safeguarding you) we can really make it through this together. Not just COVID-19, but in terms of the school year, you will face challenges. I do not think it is about overcoming challenges, but to deal with challenges and move forward. We must push through together,” said Minister Powell.

The minister also told students that once they put in the work given the resources provided success is almost a guarantee in their academics. He also noted that several areas of the school have benefited from recent works done, with plans already in place for future improvements to the Cayon High School.

“We are going to try from the Ministry of Education and your teachers will try to ensure that you have a safe school to attend, a safe environment and that you have all the tools that you need to achieve your academic success. You need to play your part as well; you have to do your work in order for that to happen. I have to safeguard you and you have to safeguard me. That is how you should talk to each other. Safeguarding me, safeguarding you; together you will push through, together we all will push through. Have a good school year and know that the Ministry of Education is here to support you. We have done a number of things around the school, in terms of fixing it up. We have a lot more to do and we will get it done, said Minister Powell.

Minister Powell introduced Mr. Dalton Esdaille as the new Deputy Principal of the Cayon High School.  Schools have only opened on St. Kitts, with the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) taking the decision to reopen on Monday, September 13, 2021, due to the current COVID-19 community spread.
