Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 12, 2023 (Cabinet Secretariat): The Cabinet Ministers met under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, The Honourable Dr Terrance Drew, on Tuesday, April 11th, 2023, and made several important decisions to improve the welfare of our people.

The Cabinet welcomed top National Security officials, Commissioner of Police Mr James Sutton and Commander of the Defence Force Mr J Anthony Comrie. During their comprehensive and compelling presentation, the officials gave an overview of the current crime situation in St. Kitts and Nevis and their plans for reducing criminal activities, especially violent crimes. Of particular importance to the officials, is the need to rebuild the trust between the security forces and the public they serve. A myriad of key goals and initiatives were highlighted, a few of which include:

  • Reinstating the School Liaison Officer programme to encourage positive mentorship of our young students,
  • Encouraging and supporting neighbourhood watches,
  • Improving the dissemination of information to the public,
  • Training in all areas of service for national security personnel,
  • Maximizing the use of technology and forensic science in their operations, and
  • Supporting youth-focused and behavioural programmes of the Ministries of Education and Social Services.

During this week The Honourable Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr Terrance Drew, will be in Washington D.C. attending the Spring Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organizations and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid effectiveness.

The Honourable Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Human Settlement, Dr Geoffrey Hanley is currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina attending the Forum of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Housing and Urban Development in Latin America and the Caribbean looking at the promotion of sustainable development of human settlements and funding for climate change mitigation in urban and rural settlements.

Also, Minister of Agriculture, The Honourable Samal Duggins will be attending the First Ministerial Conference on Low Emission Food Systems in Santiago, Chile. The Conference will seek to address the challenge of reducing methane in agriculture as well as strengthen the coordination among Ministries of Agriculture and Environment and international organisations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the food sector.
