The recently constituted National Assembly of People’s Power in its X Legislature ratified Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez in his position as president of the Republic of Cuba, during the constitutive session held this April 19 at the Havana Convention Center.

From the Palace of Conventions in Havana, the president of the National Electoral Council, Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, reported that Díaz-Canel obtained 459 votes, 97.66% of the total number of deputies that make up the Assembly, for which he has obtained the favorable vote of the absolute majority.

The Assembly also ratified Salvador Antonio Valdés Mesa as Vice President of the Republic, obtaining 439 votes, 93.4% of the total number of deputies in the Assembly, for which he won the favorable vote of the absolute majority.

Balseiro Gutiérrez explained that in both cases, both for the election of the president and the vice president, the percentage is calculated against the total number of deputies in the Assembly, so the absence of eight deputies on this day is also reflected in the results of voting.

The re-elected President of the Republic Miguel Díaz Canel Bermudez proposed ratifying Manuel Marrero Cruz as Prime Minister.

“Since his appointment, his management has coincided with the great challenges of covid-19 and the tightening of the blockade. He has developed a work style marked by interaction with the people and direct attention to the attention of social policies, including work in the neighborhoods,” said Díaz-Canel.

Deputies expressed their approval of the proposal by raising their hands. It was approved by an absolute majority.

Ratified for vice prime ministers: Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, Ines María Chapman, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella and Alejandro Gil Fernández. The latter is ratified as Minister of Economy and Planning.
