Basseterre, St. Kitts

On Monday 2nd September 2024, the Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment signed the Ocean Coordination Mechanism (OCM MOU) for the Wider Caribbean making Saint Kitts and Nevis the 12th country to join this historic mechanism.

The Minister’s signature comes on the heels of the Tenth Meeting of the OECS Council of Ministers: Environmental Sustainability where Member States agreed to support, in their respective national capacities, the operationalization of the Mechanism.  

Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke signs the Ocean Coordination Mechanism (OCM MOU) for the Wider Caribbean

The OCM MOU will facilitate programmatic coordination of ocean governance and enhance collaboration and synergies between key regional organizations and Member States.   Actions which will help safeguard our oceans, coastal ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and the socioeconomic development and wellbeing of our people.

Saint Kitts and Nevis’ membership symbolizes the Government’s unwavering commitment to the pursuit of full sustainability through the actualization of the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) and evidences the importance of leveraging multilateral partnerships to realize and co-create a healthy and climate resilient blue economy.

To date, seven (7) Intergovernmental Organizations and twelve (12) countries have signed on to the MOU including five (5) Members of the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM) region.
