Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 18, 2025 (PMO) –- In his address at the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Regional Dialogue with the Caribbean, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew emphasized the critical need for increased support to bolster the nation’s climate resilience and sustainable development efforts.

He acknowledged the GCF’s invaluable role, stating, “The simple truth is that the GCF has been a ready, willing, and indispensable partner in helping our Caribbean countries to progress toward their climate mitigation and adaptation goals.” However, he highlighted that among Caribbean nations, “St. Kitts, of all the countries in the region, has had the least support thus far.” The Prime Minister expressed optimism that hosting the GCF Regional Dialogue would be pivotal in ensuring that St. Kitts and Nevis secures the necessary assistance to enhance its climate resilience and achieve its sustainable development objectives.

Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to strengthening partnerships and advocating for equitable support to effectively address the challenges posed by climate change. In January 2025, the government reaffirmed its dedication to regional climate resilience by ratifying the agreement establishing the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC). This strategic move aligns with the nation’s Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA), which emphasizes climate resilience as a central pillar for long-term sustainable development.

Furthering its climate action initiatives, St. Kitts and Nevis embarked on developing a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) in March 2024. This plan aims to devise strategic actions to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the twin-island Federation, reflecting a proactive approach to safeguarding the country’s future.

In a pioneering effort to enhance water and food security, the government explored the potential of the Xploration Coastline Concept (XCC) in December 2024. This initiative aims to build resilience against acute water scarcity, showcasing the nation’s commitment to innovative solutions for climate adaptation.

To further bolster its climate resilience framework, St. Kitts and Nevis hosted the final workshops for the GCF Readiness 4 Project in February 2025. This three-year initiative focused on strengthening the country’s capacity to manage disaster risks and build resilience to climate change impacts by enhancing legislative, regulatory, and operational frameworks.

Additionally, the government launched a project in June 2024 to establish the first Digital Climate Data Repository for the Federation. This repository aims to provide accurate and actionable information to better understand and predict the impacts of climate change, thereby informing decision-making related to disaster risk reduction and climate services opportunities.

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains committed to strengthening partnerships and advocating for equitable support to effectively address the challenges posed by climate change. Through strategic initiatives and collaborations, the nation strives to enhance its climate resilience and achieve its sustainable development goals.
