Basseterre, Saint Kitts, 10 October 2025 – The Ministry of Sustainable Development (MOSD) officially announces its celebration of Sustainability Month – a dynamic, month-long observance dedicated to showcasing the Ministry’s pivotal role in building resilience by advancing the nation’s Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) which aims to accelerate the attainment of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and promote development planning guided by our National Development Planning Framework (led by Ministry of Economic Development).

This year marks the third anniversary of this observance which is being held under the theme “MOSD Leading into the Future”.  As a special feature, the celebrations will also highlight the Department of Statistics’ Statistics Week to underscore the critical role of data in evidence-based policymaking, national planning, progress tracking and the overall achievement of sustainable development.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Ms. Sherilita Dore-Tyson noted that “each year the Ministry highlights the work of one of its departments, and for 2025, the spotlight is on the Department of Statistics.  This focus is especially timely as CARICOM commemorates 50 years of Statistics in the region – a milestone that we are proud to incorporate into our national celebrations.  We will be deep diving into our National Census Report and exploring what these findings mean for our country’s future.”

The Sustainability Month calendar is packed full of activities designed to:

  • Share the Ministry’s ongoing projects and activities that benefit the achievement of national sustainability.
  • Encourage staff engagement and the exploration of potential avenues for cross-collaboration.
  • Educate and involve the public in the Ministry’s mission and milestones.

Minister of Sustainable Development, the Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke emphasized the significance of this observance, expressing that:

“Sustainability Month is both a celebration and a stocktaking for our Ministry.  On one hand, it’s an opportunity to highlight our systems and the progress they secure, and intentionally welcome the people of our nation (including our youth) to participate along with us while on the other, it gives us the space to jointly identify innovative ways to improve our services and revitalize our mandate so that we can more effectively achieve sustainability via our Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA).”

Throughout the month of October, the Ministry will host a variety of internal and public-facing events and initiatives, including:

  • Staff Development Sessions – To foster capacity-building across all departments and units.
  • Health & Wellness Activities – To promote physical and mental well-being among staff.
  • Public Engagements – School visits, community town halls, and a Ministry Open Day to increase transparency, facilitate in-person engagement and awareness-raising.
  • Land Distribution Ceremonies – As outcomes of the Ministry’s L.A.N.D Initiative and land regularization efforts.
  • A Sustainability Symposium – An intra-ministerial event focused on Sustainable Settlements in collaboration with the staff of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment, Parks and Beaches and Solid Waste Management Corporation to advance shared goals and give light to the interconnections and synergisms existing between environmental conservation and sustainable land management.

The Ministry encourages the participation of citizens in the activities listed in the public events calendar and to follow along with all media engagements.
