Basseterre, Saint Kitts, November 05, 2025 (SKNIS) — The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis today, November 05, officially opened the newly reconstructed St. Peter’s Island Main Road, marking the successful completion of the Rehabilitation of the St. Peter’s Main Road and F.T. Williams Highway East Project. The EC $31 million initiative stands as a significant investment in the nation’s transport infrastructure and a major step forward in improving connectivity, safety, and community development.

The comprehensive project scope included full road reconstruction, base stabilisation, asphalt resurfacing, and the installation of retaining walls, curbs, sidewalks, and wider roadways to enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety. A new roundabout at the St. Peter’s Anglican Church Junction was constructed to improve traffic circulation, while an additional slip lane at the Shadwell Roundabout now eases congestion and streamlines traffic flow into and out of the area.

Importantly, the works were executed with a strong emphasis on efficiency, safety, and cost control, ensuring that the project was completed within the approved EC $31 million budget.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Transport, and Utilities, the Honourable Konris Maynard, underscored the broader significance of the project.

Hon. Konris Maynard

“Every road that we build is more than just asphalt and concrete. It is really a pathway to dignity, to safety, and to opportunity,” said Minister Maynard. “Roads connect families, boost businesses, strengthen our communities, and build our nation. So as we open the St. Peter’s Main Road and F.T. Williams East Road today, we celebrate not only the progress we see before us, but the bright road ahead — paved with togetherness, vision, and continued development.”

Minister Maynard further highlighted that this project forms part of the government’s aggressive national road infrastructure programme, which has seen over EC $80 million invested in road development across the island.

“We have delivered new concrete roads in Whitehouse Gardens, Shadwell West, Shadwell South, Boyd’s View, Palmetto Point, Racecourse Newton Ground, and Rawlins, St. Paul’s. We have resurfaced countless others across the island … and so each of these roads tell us a story, a story of care, a story of competence, and of commitment to the people who use them every single day,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senior Engineer at the Public Works Department, Ms. La Reine Gumbs, highlighted the project’s strong focus on drainage and flood mitigation.

“We prioritised the installation of underground concrete box drains, covered side drains, and improved culvert systems. These upgrades ensure that the roadway remains serviceable during periods of heavy rainfall, reducing erosions and surface drainage over time,” Ms. Gumbs said, while adding that coordination with utility providers was also key to successfully integrating telecommunications, water, and electrical systems in ways that support future development and minimise disruptions.”

The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis extended commendations to Alexis Hazel and his team at Rock & Dirt Limited, the main contractor, for their professionalism, efficiency, and timely delivery of a high-quality project within the approved budget.

This project represents another tangible step in the government’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure renewal and sustainable national development, ensuring that communities across Saint Kitts and Nevis remain connected, safe, and ready for the opportunities ahead.
