In keeping with the recent receipt of Tsunami Evacuation Maps for St. Kitts and Nevis, the

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is implementing a public education and awareness campaign on St. Kitts. National Disaster Coordinator, Mr. Carl Herbert indicated that the purpose of this initiative is for residents to be aware that the maps exist and to assist with proper interpretation. He further indicated that the maps are an important resource that can be applied in addressing physical development considerations, including the placement of infrastructure and other critical facilities. On St. Kitts, among the individuals to whom the NEMA has distributed maps were Members of Parliament, Members of the Cabinet, Resident Diplomatic and Consular Corps and Permanent Secretaries. Maps were also provided to entities including, Day Care Centres, Nurseries, Public and Private Schools and other educational facilities. Other key institutions will be addressed in coming days.

Thursday 27th October, 2016, representatives of local media establishments, Community Development Officers and volunteers of NEMA’s Districts on St. Kitts, participated in a seminar at the NEMA Headquarters. Management of the NEMA Office, also a representative of the Department of Physical Planning who contributed to the development of the documents, provided participants with information about the maps, including their origin, development, how they should be interpreted and used. The entities were specifically invited to the seminar, in keeping with the important role and responsibilities they perform in imparting information to residents. The maps are part of our country’s ongoing tsunami readiness programme and strongly support signs that will shortly be erected at strategic locations island wide. The maps will be presented to and discussed with residents, during a media event being planned for early November, 2016.
