Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 02, 2016 (SKNIS): The streets of Basseterre will be taken over by more than 300 young people for a short time on Friday (November 04), as they participate in the Department of Youth Empowerment’s Youth Month March and Rally.

Students from nine primary schools, six high schools and other youth advocates will proudly stand as representatives of the largest segment of the population, as they promote the theme for November’s Youth Month “Preparing for the Future; Investing in our Youth.” The event begins at 2 p.m. with the march from Greenlands to Independence Square. This will be immediately followed by the rally segment that will see brief remarks by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth, Honourable Shawn Richards. Youth Special Adviser, Vernon Connor, will also provide an update on the Federal Youth Policy Initiative and launch its official banner and jingle.

Entertainment at the rally will be provided by Dejour, Infamus, cultural drummers from various primary schools and other local acts. Maluska Lapsey of the Department of Youth Empowerment is spearheading the activity.

“Most persons tend to look down on young people and cast the actions of a misguided few onto the whole lot,” she said, referring to those that engage in antisocial activities. “We are doing this march and rally to help showcase the positive young people and the important role they play in shaping our future.”

Printouts of the full calendar of activities will be available along with flyers for various activities such as the Island Bike Run on November 13, the High Schools Choir Fest on November 20 and the Daddy-Daughter Dance on November 27. Persons will also be able to sign up for these events at the rally.
