Youth Officer, Suelika Creque, said a number of designs were submitted for consideration last year and the eventual winner was Earlene Webbe, a student of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS). This year, the youth staff hopes to get even more and Ms. Creque has called on art teachers, particularly in the high schools, to help motivate their students.

“And I also want to urge other stakeholders and persons in the community, who invest in young people, to get them involved,” Ms. Creque said, noting that sometimes adults force children to participate in activities they are not interested in because of their own personal biases. “Not everyone would excel in academics or sports. There are other avenues that they can excel in including the artistic field.”

The designs should feature no more than two colours and be submitted on 8.5” x 11” paper.

Youth Officer Creque said winning the competition is a feather in the cap for the student. “This is a tremendous accolade to add to their resume. Imagine having your very own design, at such a young age, on over 300 T-Shirts. That’s Amazing. Not many of our established artists have had such an opportunity,” she added.

The winner also gets an airbursh set, art supplies, and free registration for the summer camp while his/her school will receive a screen printing starter set. The top five submissions will receive gift vouchers for supplies.

The submission deadline is Friday, March 31, 2017. Registration forms and competition rules are available from the Department of Youth Empowerment on Church Street. Additional information is available by calling 467-1393 or email: youth@gov.kn.
