Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 15, 2018 (SKNIS): The Government of National Unity’s extended week of celebratory activities to mark its three-year anniversary kicked off on Thursday, February 15, with the official reopening of the National ICT Centre at the CA Paul Southwell Industrial Park.

Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, in delivering the key address said that such an initiative is symbolic as it “signals the government’s commitment to enhancing the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), which is a critical part of our mission to build a 21st Century government focused on effectively serving the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and indeed the people all around the world.”

Prime Minister Harris said the theme for the celebrations: “Opening doors and creating opportunities through service and Empowerment” is quite suitable and timely, especially for such an auspicious occasion.

“In the context of our commemorative anniversary theme of opening doors, there is no better way to open the doors to opportunities to service and empowerment than through digital literacy and the pervasive application of ICT,” said Dr. Harris. “Today’s events are more than symbolism of the changing times. They are the substance of our progressive agenda to improve the quality of life for all people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

He explained that the use of ICT has always been at the forefront of his government and further noted that St. Kitts and Nevis is a country to follow with respect to Information and Communication Technologies.

“During the three years since we have been in office, the Team Unity Government’s steadfast approach to minimizing the use of ICTs has yielded steady gains and strong performance resulting in other countries in the region looking to the progress here as the model which they must emulate,” said the prime minister.

Prime Minister Harris noted that ICT has been integrated in a number of sectors, including but not limited to, Safety and Security, Health, Education, and Labour. He commended the Honourable Vincent Byron, Minister of Communications and the staff at the Department of Information Technology for their hard work and dedication over the years.
