The late Sergeant Dwight Davis

Mr. Speaker, I rise not only in my capacity as Prime Minister, but also as National Security Minister to extend my heartfelt condolences, and those of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, to the family and loved ones of 37-year-old Sergeant Dwight Davis, who was tragically shot and killed last night (Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018).

Our sincere condolences also go out to the close-knit St. Paul’s Community, from which he hailed, as well as to the leadership and rank-and-file members of the security forces, and in particular the Royal St. Christopher & Nevis Police Force.

Sergeant Davis gave valiant service to St. Kitts and Nevis, working his way through the ranks of the Police Force, which bestowed upon him a promotion from Corporal (CPL) to Acting Sergeant (Ag. SGT) on June 1st, 2016.

As they grieve, the resources, attention and priority of the Royal St. Christopher & Nevis Police Force are nevertheless focused at this time on investigating the circumstances that led to Sergeant Davis’ untimely death and bringing to justice the person or persons responsible.

Today, I reaffirm my Government’s commitment to fully supporting all of our brave and dedicated security forces as they endeavour to defend the safety and security of our great country.  I encourage all of us to show our support to our security forces by providing any information that you deem useful or relevant in clarifying the circumstances around Sergeant Davis’ death.

If you saw something or know something, please contact a member of the Police High Command or Crime Stoppers.

The death of Sergeant Davis reminds us that our security forces face tremendous risks every day in the performance of their important duties.  Lest we forget the significant contributions that they all make in maintaining law and order, I take this opportunity to commend our security forces and encourage them to hold up under the strain of the death of one of their own.

We hold all whose lives have been touched by Sergeant Davis in one way or another up in our prayers and hope that they find comfort and strength in trusting in God’s grace, love, mercy and plan for each and every one of us.
