BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 23, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, met today, Wednesday, May 23, with the rank and file of the Nevis Division of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police at the Charlestown Police Station, where he personally thanked them for their commitment to service and pledged his government’s unwavering support in their fight against crime.
Prime Minister Harris was accompanied at today’s meeting by Cabinet colleague, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, as well as members of the Police High Command, including Commissioner of Police, Ian Queeley and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hilroy Brandy. Also on hand was Head of the Nevis Division of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, Superintendent Trevor Mills.
In addressing the officers, Dr. Harris said the Team Unity Administration has mobilized millions of dollars in support for law enforcement in St. Kitts and Nevis in projects and programmes such as the installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in known hot spots, the construction of a state-of-the-art forensic department in Tabernacle and improving the fleet of vehicles for the various security agencies.
“Where we can do anything that will make life more comfortable, we certainly as a government are motivated to doing so and we will do so but we need to ensure that we are getting results for the investments that we are making in law enforcement,” said Prime Minister Harris, who is also Minister of National Security.
The prime minister used the occasion to laud the officers on Nevis for their quick responses to recent criminal acts, in particular, the robbery incident at Mem’s Pizzeria on April 25, where the quick response by officers resulted in the apprehension of the alleged perpetrator that same evening.
Dr. Harris added, “We would wish that that kind of excellent response and coordination become not once in a moment activity, but become synonymous with policing in every division and in every policing district.”
Furthermore, Prime Minister Harris urged the men and women in law enforcement to take full advantage of the various programmes being made available to them by the government, including the recently announced EC$30 million housing and property ownership programme, specifically targeted at Government employees.
Prime Minister Harris and Minister Liburd then joined Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley for a meeting with the men and women of the Nevis Division of the Fire and Rescue Services Department.
Supported also by Deputy Fire Chief, Abdias Samuel, Prime Minister Harris reiterated the government’s support of the men and women of essential services in the twin island Federation.
