“From the time I heard ‘Jazzy D’ saying on the radio about patriotism, I said I am a very patriotic persons and I want to take part in this. So I started getting down on it and I thought about the love of God in there. If you know God, you love Him; if you love God, you want to serve Him, and I said this is how it is,” said Mrs. Slack. “I know my country, so I love my country. So there I went on – Love, Service, Patriotism, Pride, Independence 35. I put all of that together and there came the theme.”

She expressed delight for having her entry chosen, which signaled that she is still creative given her age.

“I feel very proud about it because when I think about it I have good age and I am pleased to think that I can still contribute to my community and country. I feel very happy about that,” she stated, while adding that it is always a joy for her to give back to the Federation wherever necessary.

Mrs. Slack encouraged future theme composers, and persons in general to always be willing and ready to give back to their country as it is important to showcase their patriotism and contribute to national development.

“If you love your country, you would want to serve your country, and if you serve your country, you are being patriotic. So if they put out to ask to take part in something that is pertaining to your country, take part in it. It will help and you will be using your brain and your experiences,” she said, while appealing to young people to play an active role in nation building. “Young people have so much to offer. Take a chance and take part in things like that and just remember that you are doing it for the love of your country.”

A call was made for submissions for the official theme for the 35th Anniversary of Independence of St. Kitts and Nevis on Monday, April 16.  A total of 34 entries from 27 persons were received.

Mrs. Slack will be duly recognized by Cabinet, and will be issued with official invitations to all major government Independence events.  Her winning theme will also be incorporated in all communications and events surrounding the Independence celebrations.
