Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 11, 2018 (SKNIS): The Ministry of Sports has taken a decision to host a scaled-down version of its annual summer sports developmental camp later this month in order to fulfil its commitment to positively engage and develop young people through sports.

A statement from the ministry said that “Because of ongoing repairs and upgrades at several of the sporting complexes, including Warner Park, the Department of Sports will be having a scaled down version of its summer developmental camp activities.”

It continues: “This year, the Department will partner with some of the National Sports Federations on some programmes and will undertake the organizing of one week programmes in others.”

Activities in netball, football, cricket and athletics (jump camp) will be coordinated by the department, while activities in handball, volleyball and basketball will feature collaborations with the National Handball Association, St. Kitts and Nevis Amateur Volleyball Association (SKAVA), and the Reach One Teach One Basketball Camp/St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association (SKABA) respectively.

Director of Sports, Anthony Wiltshire, said that activities for tennis begin on Monday, July 16, at Warner Park. The other activities will be held from July 23 to 27 and are as follows: Athletics at the Kim Collins Stadium; Cricket at the Conaree Playing Field; Netball and Volleyball at Warner Park, Basketball at Bird Rock and Basketball City; Football at Warner Park/ the Gardens Sporting Complex; and Golf at Frigate Bay.

According to the statement, the changes to this year’s camp “enables the Department [of Sports] to continue much needed work on many of its facilities and also to foster more creative relationships with our many co-stakeholders.”

Forging greater partnerships with local sports associations has been a priority for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Sports, Honourable Shawn Richards. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Sports is pushing ahead with plans to establish a Federal Sports Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan. The policy will provide structure to the efforts of public, private, community and not-for-profit agencies as they pursue sports developmental strategies. Stakeholders will be engaged at various stages along the way to ensure that the document reflects their respective goals and objectives.

For more information on the sports camp, interested parties should visit the Department of Sports, at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium, Skybox 6; or call 466 1450.
