BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, November 30, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris spent part of his day on Thursday, November 29, 2018 – 25 years to the day when he was first elected as the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #7 – reaching out to the elderly and vulnerable persons within his constituency.

Among the places Prime Minister Harris visited was the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux, where he greeted patients and medical staff on duty.

“The constituents have been good to put on a very full calendar of events to mark my 25th anniversary. One of the opportunities that has been provided is for me to come to say thank you and for me to come and give support to all those who have been making a contribution in nation-building. In this regard, we have come to the Mary Charles Hospital to visit the sick, to applaud the nursing and medical fraternity for their service in nation-building, and to really again commend the efforts that have led to the building of a brand-new and improved Mary Charles Hospital with expanded service,” Prime Minister Harris said before presenting a gift package to the institution.

In August of 2016, the Team Unity administration delivered to the people of the Keys to Saddlers medical district an extensively refurbished Mary Charles Hospital.

The healthcare facility now boasts dental and 24-hour EMT/Ambulance services, which were reintroduced earlier this year after several years. The reintroduction of the EMT/Ambulance service represents a significant enhancement in the delivery of healthcare, as it is resulting in quicker response times in emergency care island wide.

The dental clinic is serving hundreds of school children throughout the district and has also alleviated the pressure from the Pogson Medical Centre in Sandy Point, which is temporarily the primary public dental facility on the island due to the temporary closure of the Newtown Dental Clinic.

“As a result of the efforts of the Government, we know that this modern facility is providing quality care, and we want to commend the nursing staff, the doctors, auxiliary workers and all who are making a contribution to the health and wellness of our people,” Prime Minister Harris said.

A further positive development in the area of healthcare taking place within Constituency #7 is the construction of a brand new modern state-of-the-art health centre in Tabernacle Village, the hometown of the Prime Minister.

The health centre in that community was also forced to close as a consequence of neglect and dilapidation under the former administration.

Once completed, the new health centre will provide a wide range of services related to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), cancers, heart-related diseases, antenatal and postnatal care, and a full range of support services including support for persons suffering from HIV/AIDS.
