In an interview with Medical Chief of Staff, Dr. Cameron Wilkinson on December 07, he expressed that the response from the EMTs has been well received, as they are excited about the opportunity afforded to them by the Ministry of Health.
“The government is making a significant financial investment so I am glad that they understand the significance of it and are not taking it for granted and understand the benefit that the public will gain from it,” he said, noting that there is no cost to the EMTs.
Four-year advanced EMT, Jevon Vallet said that the course has been really important for him and noted that the facilitators have been doing a good job in teaching them different skills and techniques.
“We do not get to practice as much so this allows us to brush up on our skills to make us better so we can serve the general public to the best of our abilities. Patient assessment is something that was stressed on because that is the one thing that we will be constantly doing. They have been doing a very good job on it and we have been very reactive and attentive towards it,” he said.
Micaelea Browne, an EMT employed for just under two years, expressed that the course was very valuable for her as a newcomer and she learned a lot that will enhance her skills substantially.
“The course was well needed, not just for me as a newcomer but even for the seniors because it was a learning experience for me as well as for them. Most of us know the normal procedures, so it was taking what we already know and doing it step by step,” stated EMT Browne.
Eleven-year veteran in the EMS, Ann Edwards said that the course was very informative and thanked the instructors for their guidance.
“The course was very productive and we learned how to be more tactful in handling our skills, and I think I will be able to manage my skills much better and be more efficient. To the instructors, I say thank you for coming and giving us the update on this refresher course,” she noted.
Advanced EMT, Ronald Roberts, who has been in the service for 17 years, lauded the course for the information it provided.
“I found the course to be very informative and it was the right timing seeing that we are now opening up to more tourists, not just for December but for the next season. It also helps the EMTs to present to the public a more uniformed approach to how we go about patient care. I personally have done a number of courses during the year, which has placed me just beyond the advanced level so I have seen it all,” he said.
