The Windsor University School of Medicine in Cayon has been getting involved with events that benefit the local community and it plans to continue to do so.
On January 12, they hosted the “Best Self Goes to University” programme which was an initiative aimed at supporting and encouraging local youth to excel. In addition to hosting the event, some of their student doctors were also involved in welcoming over 100 youth, parents and community leaders who attended the programme. The programme is a collaboration between Dare 2 Be Different International and the St Christopher’s Children’s Home and supported by other interested individuals and organisations. The groups were highly appreciative of the university opening its doors to local youth and their parents. Those who attended were exposed to the view that university and personal development can be a gateway to fulfilling dreams and making a positive contribution to society.
On March 1 the university will again be hosting the International Women in Employment & Business (WEB) Conference which will be bringing a delegation of seven (7) professional women from the UK to share their expertise alongside an impressive roster of presenters from across St Kitts and Nevis.
The visiting delegation will be: Prof Laura Serrant,,OBE – Manchester Metropolitan University; Prof Claudia Bernard – Goldsmiths University, University of London; Prof Uvanney Maylor – University of Bedfordshire; Ms Roz Thornton – Amazing Women Global and winner of a Business Woman of the Year award; Ms Peaches Cadogan – award-winning actress, Co-Founder of The Womanhood Academy and charity Reality Bytes UK; Dr Naomi Watson – Open University; and Dr Gail Coleman-Olawabusola – Affinity Psychology and Honorary Lecturer at University of Sheffield.
With the UN Gender Equality in mind, the conference promises to have a unique focus on how both men and women can harmonise their efforts so that women can release their professional potential. The importance of the conference has been noted by both organisations in the Federation and regionally, and expects to bring delegates from other Caribbean islands as well as from across the Federation, the USA and the UK.
The university has in the past been recognised for its commitment to providing support to local initiatives and therefore welcomes the opportunity to extend its reach to link with other university personnel from across the UK as well as within St Kitts-Nevis.
Professor Laura Serrant, OBE will be giving the keynote speech “Resilience and Readiness in a Global Environment” at the WEB conference on March 1 at Windsor University.
