Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 4, 2019 (SKNIS): The Honourable Wendy C. Phipps, Minister of State with responsibility for Gender Affairs, will officially address the nation in recognition of International Women’s Day 2019, which is celebrated on March 8.

The address will be carried on ZIZ Radio (95.9, 96.1 and 96.9 FM) at 4:30 pm, 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Monday, March 4 and 7:30 am on Tuesday, March 5.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights. After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women’s Day on February 28, 1909 in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference suggested a Women’s Day be held annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
