THOUSANDS CONTINUE TO BENEFIT FROM TEAM UNITY’S COMPREHENSIVE SOCIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAMMES AND POLICIES

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, March 20, 2019 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – One of the hallmarks of the four-year old Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris-led Team Unity administration has been its ability to quickly respond to the needs of the ordinary citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Prime Minister Harris said, “We have been a high performing Government. You could talk about roads, you could talk about jobs, you could talk about the STEP programme, you could talk about our FRESH Start support to local businesses where $15 million plus dollars were given to the young people.”

“In every nook and cranny of St. Kitts and Nevis, the work of Team Unity can be seen,” Prime Minister Harris stated while addressing a packed St. Johnston Community Center last evening (Tuesday, March 20) at the third Community Consultation town hall meeting.

The prime minister added that whether it has been through the $500 monthly assistance to households earning less than $3000 per month, the historic hurricane roof repair programme or the comprehensive housing solution programmes, “The Team Unity Government has been assisting people in every community.”

Statistics from the office of the Accountant General, as stated by Prime Minister Harris, revealed that an average of 3,553 households have benefited from the Poverty Alleviation Programme.

Furthermore, more than 2,600 households have benefited to date from the Government’s hurricane roof repair programme.

“First time in the history [of St. Kitts and Nevis] have so many persons benefited in the aftermath of a hurricane,” said Prime Minister Harris, who added that, “It blesses my heart when people come forward and acknowledge the difference that our programmes and policies have been making in their lives.”

The prime minister further noted that it is as a result of such social intervention programmes why St. Kitts and Nevis is fast becoming a magnet for citizens of other countries wanting to make the twin island Federation their home.

“They come here from the United States of America; they come here from Canada; they come here from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Africa, the Republic of Haiti, and the Republic of Venezuela – they are all coming, and we welcome them all,” Dr. Harris said. He also welcomed the growing Dominican community in the country.
