Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 03, 2019 (SKNIS): Twenty-four (24) families in East Basseterre will receive brand new homes upon completion of the Wellington Road Residences come October 2019, according to the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Minister of Public Infrastructure and Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher One during the (April 02) “Community Consultation”, town hall styled meeting held at the Newtown Community Centre.
“In each building, we will have six units, nice condo styled apartments, so we will have 24 families located in those houses… when those buildings are completed, East Basseterre Corner House and the country will never be the same again,” said Minister Liburd. “I came to deliver, and I am delivering.”
The Minister of Public Infrastructure gave an update on the progress thus far.
“We started demolishing those houses on Monday, April 01 and we will complete that come Thursday, April 04. The construction will start in earnest and come September we will have three houses completed and by October we will have four brand new houses completed,” he said.
He noted that about five to six million dollars were spent on 12 studio type apartments at Pond’s Estate to temporarily house the tenants from the Wellington Road houses. The apartments are outfitted with stoves and refrigerators.
The groundbreaking for the Wellington Road Housing Project took place in June 2018. The townhouse style residences on Wellington Road were officially showcased with the launching of the UNITY Housing Solution Programme in February 2017.
