Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 6, 2019 (DBSKN) — The St. Paul’s Cricket Club has a mission to keep primary and high school students from the surrounding communities constructively occupied by conducting cricket coaching sessions, and it has plans to improve delivery of the sessions on the cards.
The club, which has been conducting the sessions at the St. Paul’s Sporting Complex cricket grounds, intends to upgrade the grounds. To achieve the task at hand, the club is sourcing a mechanical roller and among individuals and corporate entities approached for financial assistance was the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis (DBSKN), which responded positively.
“We are here to request assistance in purchasing a mechanical roller to help us with the preparation of the grounds for cricket because we have been having children coming to St. Paul’s Sporting Complex cricket grounds for training sessions,” Mr Naren Maynard, the club’s Treasurer, explained when he briefed the bank’s Marketing Officer Ms Vernitha Evelyn-Maynard last week.
According to Mr Naren Maynard, sessions are held every Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon “and primary school and high school children will come and we train them, and grooming them in an effort to keep them off the streets and the violence and so on. We help them in advancing their skills by giving them the necessary training – how to bat, how to stroke, and so on. We help them to get better at their talents, and their skills get better.”
Children who turn up for the sessions at the St. Paul’s cricket ground come not only from the village of St. Paul’s but from the neighbouring communities of Newton Ground, Parsons Ground, and Saddlers in Constituency Number Six, but from as far as Sandy Point in Constituency Number Five.
The Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis responded positively and last week Treasurer of the St. Paul’s Cricket Club received a cheque of $3,000 from Ms Vernitha Evelyn-Maynard, the bank’s Marketing Officer, as the financial institution’s contribution towards the purchase of the mechanical roller. Other sponsors include the St. Kitts Cricket Association and individuals from in and around the St. Paul’s area.
“When it comes to cricket, St. Kitts and Nevis has a vast potential,” noted Ms Evelyn-Maynard. “Over the years the Development Bank has partnered with cricket officials both in St. Kitts and in Nevis, the result of which was the discovery and exposure of a number of players who have excelled at the local, regional and international level. St. Paul’s Cricket Club is doing the right thing and they need the support of all who understand what cricket means to us not only in St. Kitts and Nevis, but in the region.”
