BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, November 30, 2019 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The historic first-ever attempt to amend the Constitution on Friday, November 29, 2019 was stymied by the self-indulgent frolic of an irresponsible Opposition.

While the hardworking members of the Government side toiled through the late hours on Friday to debate the landmark Constitution of Saint Christopher and Nevis (Tenure of Office of Prime Minister) (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Opposition MPs were busy doing personal errands rather than serving their constituents and the country.

Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, who was the mover of the Bill, condemned the callous and irresponsible behaviour of the Labour Party MPs who boycotted the final day of the debate.

Honourable Marcella Liburd, Member for Constituency Two, in spite of seven days notice of the sitting of Parliament on Thursday (November 28), reportedly boarded an American Airlines flight to Miami. Reports suggest that the member had gone shopping.

MP Liburd failed to attend the Parliament for any period over the two-day sitting.

Moreover, the Honourable Konris Maynard, Member for Constituency Three, neglected Parliament during its marathon session from around 10:00am to close to 10:00pm on Friday. The Opposition MP did so without informing the Honourable House.

Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas boycotted the afternoon session of the proceedings. He was later seen loitering in the Port Zante area in the vicinity of Cheers bar.
