Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 22, 2021 (SKNIS): The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is celebrating World Water Day on Monday 22nd March as a means to bring attention to the importance of freshwater and advocate for sustainable management of freshwater resources.
This was stated by the Minister of Public Infrastructure, Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Shawn Richards during his World Water Day address to the nation on March 20.
The global theme for this year’s World Water Day celebrations is “Valuing Water” declared by the United Nations.
Deputy Prime Minister Richards said that as a human civilization we understand how important and essential water is for the daily survival of the human race.
“In fact, at the St. Kitts Water Services Department, our motto is: Water is Life, Every Drop Counts,” he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also said that “The value of water is about much more than its price – water has enormous and complex value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural environment.”
“Without a comprehensive understanding of water’s true, multidimensional value, we will be unable to safeguard this critical resource for the benefit of everyone,” he said. “‘Valuing Water’ therefore means cooperation between the various segments of our society and stakeholders.”
Deputy Prime Minister Richards committed to ensuring that the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis through the Water Services Department continue to make certain that all reasonable needs of water customers are met in a timely and efficient manner through the effective management of the water resources. -30-
