Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 02, 2022 (SKNIS): Minister responsible for the Attorney General’s Chambers, Ministry of Justice, Legal Affairs, Education, Sports, Foreign Affairs and Aviation, the Honourable Vincent Byron Jr., said that the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to operate in a seamless fashion to carry out the mandate of a brighter, safer future for all.

“In the midst of this period of transition, we must ensure that the business of Government is carried out in a seamless fashion and our various commitments are properly undertaken. In fact, one of our primary responsibilities is to ensure peace, order and good governance within the Federation,” said Attorney-General Byron at a Cabinet Press Conference held on Wednesday, June 01, 2022, at NEMA. “In that vein, I remain committed to ensuring that the Government, its officials and agents function adequately and they are accountable under the law.”

Attorney-General Byron said that St. Kitts and Nevis and the Government have adhered to the tenets of good governance and the rule of law.

“With regards to the Office of the Attorney-General, Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, we remain cognizant of our role as gatekeepers in upholding the tenets of transparency, accountability and the rational application of the laws. As we continue to uphold the rule of law, we do so with a keen eye on the administration of the laws in a manner that is clear, publicized, stable and fair,” said Minister Byron Jr.

Equally important, with respect to the Law Court, Attorney-General Byron Jr. said that the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore High Court Building is in urgent need of repairs hence the temporary relocation of services to the C&C Building which houses the High Court Registry, the Offices of the Registrar, two (2) Court Chambers and also the Offices of Their Lordships and local Resident Judges.

“Access to justice is, therefore, a key concern and in that connection, the courts have been temporarily relocated to the C & C Building in order to ensure that matters continue to be heard whilst we facilitate the renovation of the Sir Lee Moore Building,” he said. “It is worth noting, however, that since the onset of the pandemic, hearings have been held via zoom and other secure online platforms and these measures continue to assist the courts in managing their caseload.  Within this context, we have been able, since last year, to have the incidence of night court where traffic matters and others can be had and be dealt with.”

Minister Byron said that the principle of good governance remains at the core of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis as it continues to push forward the prosperity agenda to uplift the people of the Federation.
