Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 20, 2024 (SKNIS): As the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to promote its Sustainable Island State Agenda, entities within the private sector are now buying into the innovative movement.
One such example of this was the activation of the Sustainable Energy Storage System at the Sunset Reef Resort on March 19. This storage system is a Solid-State Supercapacitor that will store solar energy and create a battery energy storage system. This would allow the resort to operate solely on renewable energy.
“This is a historic occasion, not just for St. Kitts and Nevis but really the region,” said the Honourable Konris Maynard, Minister of Energy. “We are doing good things and this falls right in line with the goal of St. Kitts and Nevis to become a sustainable island state.”
The Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, shared his enthusiasm for the energy storage system. He explained that he and David Fletcher, General Manager of Sunset Reef, had discussed this project for a while. Prime Minister Dr. Drew decided to collaborate with Mr. Fletcher, offering support to ensure the system’s establishment in the Federation.
“I am elated that we have finally achieved such an advanced technology in the realm of renewable energy and battery storage here for the first time in the Caribbean, here in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the Honourable Prime Minister.
With the activation of the energy storage system, Sunset Reef Resort, the winner of the prestigious Caribbean Journal’s Sustainable Hotel of The Year 2024, award, continues to be a model for the rest of the private sector within the Federation.
