Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 04, 2025 (SKNIS):  Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister, The Honourable Dr Terrance Drew, the Cabinet convened on Monday, March 03, 2025, to deliberate on and advance critical policies designed to enhance the well-being of all citizens and residents. Today, I am pleased to share with you the outcomes of these discussions, which underscore your government’s commitment to inclusivity, progress, and the sustainable development of our nation.

Among the major decisions taken was the Cabinet approval for Saint Kitts and Nevis to become a State Party to the Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons (IACHROP). This pivotal convention champions the principle of equality for all, ensuring that age is never a basis for discrimination. It enshrines essential rights for our elderly population, including the right to care, the prioritization of aging in public policies, and the establishment of robust mechanisms to prevent abuse, neglect, and violence against older persons. By ratifying this convention, Saint Kitts and Nevis reaffirms its dedication to fostering a society where every individual, regardless of age, is valued, protected, and empowered to participate fully in our nation’s growth. This step aligns seamlessly with our vision of a sustainable island state, where inclusivity and active participation are not just ideals but lived realities.

In the same spirit of inclusion, the Cabinet also approved Saint Kitts and Nevis becoming a State Party to the Inter-American Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities. This convention represents a bold commitment to preventing and eliminating discrimination against persons with disabilities, ensuring their full integration into every aspect of societal life. By ratifying this convention, our nation takes a significant stride towards creating an environment where persons with disabilities can thrive, contribute, and enjoy the same opportunities as their fellow citizens. This decision further solidifies your government’s resolve to build a society where no one is left behind, and where diversity is celebrated as a cornerstone of our collective strength.

Turning to legislative achievements, I am proud to highlight the remarkable progress made during this Parliamentary Term, which began on October 25, 2022. As of February 27, 2025, 71 new laws have been tabled, with 65 successfully passed during 29 Parliamentary sittings. This robust legislative activity reflects the Saint Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Administration’s proactive approach to addressing the needs and aspirations of our people. In preparation for the coming years, the Cabinet has initiated a comprehensive review of the proposed legislative agenda for 2025-2026. Key bills have been identified and prioritized, ensuring that our legislative framework continues to evolve in alignment with our national development goals and the strengthening of our democracy.
