BASSETERRE, Saint Kitts, October 17, 2025 (SKNIS) – Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, has issued a renewed call for greater responsibility and care on the nation’s roads, urging all motorists to avoid speeding above the legal limit and drive safely as part of a collective effort to save lives.
Speaking during the Friday, October 17, 2025, Sitting of the National Assembly, Prime Minister Drew highlighted that speeding remains the leading cause of road fatalities in Saint Kitts and Nevis, according to research from the Traffic Department and consultations with accident specialists.
“Speeding has been identified as the number one cause of deaths on our roads,” Dr. Drew stated. “We must encourage our people to cut their speed. Research has shown that the faster you go, the more likely it is for you to get into an accident.”

The prime minister noted that the government has already begun implementing technological measures, including the introduction of photo radar systems, to detect and deter excessive speeding. However, he emphasised that lasting road safety begins with behavioural change among drivers.
“This is not in any effort to do anything else other than to save lives,” Dr. Drew affirmed. “Saint Kitts is not big. To go from any place in Saint Kitts and Nevis, even if you drive fast, will only save you a few minutes. The risk of death is not worth it.”
Prime Minister Drew underscored the government’s commitment to using data-driven strategies to inform road safety policies, improve enforcement, and reduce accidents. He appealed to all road users to exercise patience, responsibility, and empathy on the roads.
“We want our people to leave home and return home safely,” the prime minister said. “And so we are encouraging our people to really cut speed so that we all can live the best life we can live.”
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis continues to advance its broader national safety agenda, leveraging technology and policy to promote safer communities and protect the lives of all citizens and residents.
