Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 08, 2026 (SKNIS): Minister of State responsible for Youth Empowerment, the Honourable Isalean Phillip, has commended the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) for its latest community initiative, the unveiling of the mural, “A World We Make,” in the heart of Basseterre.
The mural, located on Upper Market Street, was officially unveiled on August 29, 2026, as part of activities surrounding SKNYPA’s 25th anniversary. It depicts the Earth held in human hands and surrounded by the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis are positioned at the centre of the globe, connecting the international development goals with the country’s own aspirations and identity.
Minister Phillip said the initiative was particularly meaningful because it places young people at the centre of an activity that not only enhances the physical environment but also carries an important message about the government’s ongoing transformation to enhance sustainability in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
“I must congratulate and commend the SKNYPA for taking the initiative to paint this mural in the heart of Central Basseterre,” said Minister of State Phillip. “I was especially impressed to see how the piece highlights the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a way to remind us of the collective efforts needed to achieve our Sustainable Island State Agenda.”
The project brings together visual art, youth participation and community involvement while highlighting the importance of sustainable development and shared responsibility for the future. Minister Phillip noted that this is also a strong example of what can be achieved when young people, creatives, residents and the private sector work together to improve their communities.
“The fact that our young people engaged a local artist and residents to paint the mural is a positive demonstration of community care and cooperation,” she said. “The final outcome is eye-catching and uplifting to the environs. Well done to SKNYPA for executing and to all who sponsored, supported and painted to bring the mural to completion.”
The mural project was led by SKNYPA member Aquanje Robinson, with local artist Sasha Herbert of Sasha the Artist Studios serving as Lead Artist and Facilitator. Community members and supporters also participated in bringing the artwork to life.
The initiative complements the Government’s continued emphasis on meaningful youth participation, community development and the pursuit of the Sustainable Island State Agenda. It also demonstrates how young people can use creativity and civic engagement to contribute to national development in practical and visible ways.
