BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 17, 2017 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has once again extended its hand of friendship to the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, this time through a monetary donation that will impact the operations of the Department of People’s Empowerment.

During a brief handing over ceremony held at Government Headquarters on Wednesday, August 16, Ambassador of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou, presented the cheque to Prime Minister and Minister responsible for People’s Empowerment, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris. In his remarks, Ambassador Chiou said it is his hope that his Government’s contribution can help further the Team Unity Administration’s mandate to empower every Kittitian and Nevisian, both at home and in the wider Diaspora.

“As I know, this department’s former name is Constituency Empowerment but the Team Unity Government would like to expand the service of this department to nationals who not only live in St. Kitts and Nevis but also to those overseas, so this is very important because the citizens, no matter if they are living in St. Kitts and Nevis or overseas, they are still citizens of the country and as the Government you have a responsibility to provide assistance and service to those nationals,” the Taiwanese ambassador stated.

In accepting the donation, Prime Minister Harris expressed his profound gratitude to the Government and people of the Republic of China on Taiwan for the timely financial contribution.

“The Government of Taiwan has agreed to provide some support to capacity building efforts within the Department of People’s Empowerment and that will basically facilitate the better functioning of the department, which largely would be involved in community based activity, assisting in community leadership and ensuring that as the Government goes about planning and acting on its development programme the people are not left out; the people who really matter and should matter in the context of our own development,” Dr. Harris said.

The prime minister noted that this latest act of generosity symbolizes the strength of the 34-year old bilateral relationship that exists between St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China on Taiwan.
