St. Kitts and Nevis Delivers CARICOM Statement at the United Nations Security Council Addressing the issue of Children and Armed Conflict: Effective Strategies to End and Prevent Grave Violations Against Children

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 20, 2018 (MOFA): On September 19, St. Kitts and Nevis’ 35th Independence anniversary was celebrated in cities across Canada. The flag of the Federation was raised at City Halls in Ottawa, Toronto and Halifax.

The capital city of Ottawa in Ontario and the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia also issued official proclamations in honour of St. Kitts and Nevis’ 35th anniversary of Independence and the longstanding relationship between the Federation and Canada.

In Halifax, a city whose trade with the Caribbean goes back centuries, the city’s Mayor Mike Savage noted the “long history of trade, cooperation and friendship” between our two nations. In presenting a copy of the city’s proclamation to H.E. Sherry Tross, High Commissioner of St. Kitts and Nevis to Canada, during the flag raising ceremony, Mayor Savage also noted the “vibrant community of Canadians” from the St. Kitts and Nevis diaspora who have made major contributions. Nationals and friends also participated in the ceremony.

As part of the recognition of St. Kitts and Nevis, High Commissioner Tross was also welcomed to a sitting of the provincial legislature at which The Hon. Tony Ince, Minister of the Public Service Commission, introduced a resolution to recognize September 19th as St. Kitts and Nevis Day in the province of Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia assembly is the oldest in Canada, having first sat in 1758.
