Acting Postmaster General, Dario Gill, welcomed participants to the workshop, which runs from October 22 to November 02, 2018 at the National ICT Centre. He noted that the software is an upgrade to the current version (IPS Light) being used locally and it has enhanced features that will enable users to have a comprehensive view of mail movement from origin to destination, including transit offices of exchange, international carriers, and handling throughout customs.
The training is part of a month-long series of activities being held in commemoration of World Post Day, observed internationally on October 09.
Minister responsible for Posts, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, said the postal system in St. Kitts and Nevis is a vital tool of communication. Minister Liburd added that government will continue to embrace new technological advancements to ensure that the federation is “not left behind.”
“We need to get abreast with what’s happening on the World Wide Web. There’s no question about that,” Minister Liburd stated. “The expected outcome of this training must be that you are better able to cope with the advances in technology; you are better able to deal with the competition because you cannot operate in a vacuum. You must understand what is happening around you.”
He added that the staff should be proud that the courier service of the post office received a good rating from the United States-based Transportation Security Administration (TSA) during a recent assessment. The minister of posts said that the nation will continue to rely on the efficient operations of the postal staff.
“The government has to put a lot of money into the post office, but the government expects and the people expect that when we put that money into the post office the returns on the investments must be something that we can be proud of,” he stated.
Acting postmaster general Gill said that the software will “go live” a few days after the training is complete. He noted that the IPS Post software will bring the Federation further in line with guidelines set out by the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
