Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 30, 2021 (SKNIS): Diplomatic relations between the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan) have over the years helped many persons to achieve tertiary education. Officials from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan) addressed the September 29, 2021, scholarship ceremony and encouraged the 17 students who received scholarships to make the most of the opportunity presented to them.

“Education and human resources are the cornerstones for national development. Over the years, it has been our great pleasure to provide scholarship opportunities to support the bright minds and talented youngsters of St. Kitts and Nevis in their pursuit of academic degrees in Taiwan. This year, a total of 17 students are awarded the Taiwan scholarships, among them 11 students received Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) scholarships and six (6) students are awarded International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) scholarships. Of the 17 students, 15 will be studying for the Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) for their Doctorate.  The various disciplines of their studies include electrical engineering, automotive engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, international health, global health and health security, life sciences, international business, mass communication, hospitality and film study,” said Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Ambassador Michael Lin.

The scholarships represent the continued partnership between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan. They also exemplify Taiwan’s continued support to the Federation’s investment in young talent.

Also speaking at the ceremony was the Minister of Education, Hon. Jonel Powell, who advised the students to make the most of the opportunity afforded to them.

“We are grateful to still have these opportunities for our people, particularly during the pandemic. I say again thank you to the Taiwanese for the ability to maintain the commitment of finding resources to assist us.  But as you go off to Taiwan to study in the various disciplines, I urge you to take advantage of the opportunity, do not limit yourself to just your areas of discipline, try and learn even more. We want that when you come back to St. Kitts and Nevis you are much more skilled and trained and are in a better position not just to be greater contributors to our society but you will be in a better position to raise your own personal levels professionally and privately. We want you to be able to come back and make a decent living for yourselves and to make the greatest contribution that you can,” said Minister Powell.
