The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has initiated preparations to establish a dedicated “Caribbean Corner” at the Sam Jonah Library, marking a significant academic collaboration with the government of St. Kitts and Nevis.

This establishment of the Caribbean Corner follows the intention of UCC and the Office of the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will signal the beginning of a rich academic and cultural partnership. The collaboration is grounded in shared history, scholarship, and exchange programmes between the two regions.

The Caribbean Corner will feature curated resources focused on the Caribbean, with particular emphasis on the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. It will showcase the nation’s history, culture, diaspora connections, and contributions to global development. Special attention will also be given to the historical ties between Ghana and the Caribbean, especially those rooted in the transatlantic slave trade and the enduring bonds of kinship, resistance, and cultural resilience.

Librarian, Dr. Anthony Cobblah, expressed his excitement about the project, stating,

“The Caribbean Corner is more than just a physical space; it is a symbol of historical reconnection and academic bridge-building between Africa and the Caribbean. We are proud to host such a space that inspires knowledge exchange and cultural appreciation.”

Dr. Cobblah also noted that a committee has been formed within the library to oversee the implementation of the project. Members of the committee include Dr. Diana Atuase, Ms. Doris Nimakoh, Mr. Theophilus Ocran, Ms. Esther Guichard, Ms. Miriam Borketey, and Mr. Frederick Ekuban.

He noted that as part of the collaboration, the committee was working towards forming Caribbean Club to project the culture of St. Kitts and Nevis to further strengthen the relationship.

Dr. Justice K.G. Agyenim-Boateng, Head of the Institutional Affiliation Office at UCC and the contact person for the scholarship programme, highlighted that the partnership will include annual study opportunities for students from St. Kitts and Nevis, faculty and students exchange programmes, and collaborative research and capacity-building initiatives.

The collaboration is expected to enhance UCC’s international engagement and foster lasting academic ties with institutions across the Caribbean. It also aligns with the University’s broader mission of advancing Pan-African education, global academic cooperation, and cultural diplomacy.

Once completed, the Caribbean Corner will be stocked with relevant books, historical archives, digital collections, and multimedia materials sourced from both UCC and institutions in St. Kitts and Nevis.

This collaboration will position UCC as a leading institution in Afro-Caribbean academic cooperation, offering students and researchers a unique platform for dialogue, discovery, and collaborative learning.
