United Nations, New York (6 October 2025) – The 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly will be documented as a historic and memorable milestone for the federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, as it was the first time in the nation’s history that a national would have presided over the General Debate of the United Nation’s General Assembly.
In an even more historic moment, that coincided with this unprecedented achievement, the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance Michael Drew, delivered a powerful address before the assembly while his Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations, a Vice President to the UN General Assembly, Dr. Mutryce Williams presided over said assembly. This landmark event marks a significant milestone, not only for the federation but also for the representation of small island developing states on the global stage.
Highlighting the federation’s positions on critical global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, gender equality, youth development, and international peace and security, Prime Minister Drew’s speech resonated with member states, and emphasized Saint Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to contributing positively to global discussions.
In reflecting on UNGA80, Prime Minister Drew said, “For the first time, a national of Saint Kitts and Nevis holds the esteemed position of Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly, a role that underscores the federation’s and this administration’s commitment to multilateral dialogue, and international cooperation.” Development Goals.”
Prime Minister Drew continued, “Today, we reflect on our progress as a nation, and take pride in our representation on such a significant platform. Saint Kitts and Nevis’ leadership at UNGA80, is a collective triumph for our people. It is an honour to stand before the world as we advocate for our interests, those of other small island nations, and for humanity. I extend words of gratitude to Ambassador Williams and her team at the Permanent Mission of Saint Kitts and Nevis at the UN for the stellar work that they have been doing on behalf of the nation, region, and world.”
Saint Kitts and Nevis had a strong and visible presence on the global stage for UNGA80. Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Michael Drew delivered the CARICOM address for the High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the Promotion of Mental Health. Prime Minister Drew also served as a Co-Chair for High-Level Meeting to Commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth.
The Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke delivered the CARICOM statement for the High – Level Meeting on the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
Ambassador Mutryce Williams would have also presided over the High – Level Meeting on the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the High – Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the Promotion of Mental Health and Well Being.
