Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 31, 2025 (PMO) —The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is moving steadily toward the construction of the new, climate-resilient general hospital, with Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew confirming that environmental and building approvals are now in their final stages.

Addressing the National Assembly, Dr. Drew stated, “The hospital is well on its way. We are in the final stages of getting all the approvals from the building board, the EIA, and all of this are being done and almost completed, and will be completed for us to move forward just now in its construction.”

The new hospital will be designed to withstand Category Five hurricanes, ensuring the continuity of healthcare delivery even during extreme climate events, according to rime Minister Drew.

“In the era of climate change, we will see Category Five hurricanes hitting the region, and our hospital cannot withstand a Category Five hurricane… that is why I took that decision,” he explained.

Dr. Drew likened the decision to a modern-day act of preparedness, stating “If Noah knew that the rain was going to come and there was going to be flood, build the ark… Well, if we know that is coming to us, let us build the hospital that can withstand what we know is a possibility of hitting Saint Kitts and Nevis.”

According to the Prime Minister, construction is scheduled to begin in December 2025.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that the project will create significant job opportunities and deliver a hospital “that will serve us for at least 50 years… certified to international standard.”
