Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 16, 2017 (RSCNPF): Members of the community can now report any information they may have regarding a crime in action, tips on past crimes and any other information that can be helpful to Law Enforcement by using the Crime Reporter Application (App) rolled out on Wednesday (February 15) during a ceremony to highlight the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis’ “E” Government Initiatives.
The application developed by the Government of St. Kitts in partnership with Open Interactive, a local Information Technology Solutions Company, provides the public with opportunity to report on criminal activity using any smart phone while doing so anonymously.
While giving an overview of the application, Police Superintendent Cromwell Henry, District “A” Commander said, “This app is another opportunity for the public to interact with the police. The app allows them to report on future crimes, that is, if you overheard a conversation [maybe] somebody is planning to do something, you can alert the police,” he added, “there is also a category to report past crimes. If a crime has already been committed and you have information as to who committed it or where stolen items might be, you can also report that. Or, if there is a crime in progress, [for example], you are witnessing someone breaking into someone’s home or you witness someone attacking someone else and you want to send that information to the police you can also.” The app also has features for the upload of pictures etc. to support the report.
Superintendent Henry also noted, “the app does not replace platforms like Crime Stoppers, it is another avenue to report.”
Commissioner of Police Mr. Ian M. Queeley heralded the rollout as another major step towards the involvement of the community in the fight against crime and said, “this app gives persons the opportunity to communicate with us anonymously, and this now takes away a concern often shared by citizens who want to get involved but didn’t want to be identified.” He added, “our team have been trained to handle the incoming information, and we embrace and look forward to the difference the app will make.”
During the ceremony four (4) additional applications from other Governmental Agencies were rolled out, a shoppers pricing tool, a news and information app from the Government Information Service (SKNIS), Government Directory app, and an app highlighting Government events. It was revealed that access and the use of the Crime Reporting app and the Government Directory app is free. A partnering gift from the local Telecoms providers.
