BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 05, 2017 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Friday’s ceremony to mark the start of construction on a three bedroom home in Tabernacle village for a single mother of five is further demonstration of the Team Unity Government’s commitment to the ordinary people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

At the “Good Governance and Accountability for Prosperity” town hall meeting held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at the Saddlers Primary School, Belle Vue resident Tara James made an emotional plea to the panel of ministers for assistance in securing a home with adequate space for her family.

She noted that she resides in a one bedroom house, which she shares with four of her five children. Her oldest son, who attends secondary school, is presently living with relatives.

Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Seven, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, told Ms. James then that the government “will try to expedite a home for you given your particular circumstance. We do that because we are a compassionate government and we love and we care for people.”

Speaking at Friday’s ground breaking ceremony, Prime Minister Harris reiterated that his Team Unity-led Administration continues to be a people-oriented government that puts the interest of the citizens first.

“In St. Kitts and Nevis, at this time, we are privileged to have a compassionate government and it is because we are a compassionate government why we are here. It is because we have a compassionate government that the cries and the entreaties of the poor and the meek in our society do not go unheard and unnoticed by this Team Unity Government,” Dr. Harris said.

The honourable prime minister noted that he’s aware there are many other citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis who have similar needs, adding, “In the same way we responded to the Cornelius family in Central Basseterre is the same way Eugene Hamilton and I, and the Cabinet by extension, we recognize that we have to respond to even more persons throughout the length and breadth of the country and we are committed to do that.”

However, Prime Minister Harris urged citizens and residents to remain patient as the government examines each situation and respond accordingly.

Dr. Harris stated that this commitment to the people extends further than housing development, evident by the government’s thrust to provide universal health care for its citizens.

“We recognize that has been a problem; we recognize that too many people are sick and suffering and they do not have the wherewithal and that is why we gave the Honourable Hamilton the opportunity to deliver with respect to that particular programme.”
