Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 20, 2017 (SKNIS): The Federal Cabinet met on Monday, July 17, 2017, under the chairmanship of the Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris. Several salient issues were addressed in that meeting, which are as follows:
1.) Cabinet had the benefit of a presentation from the Ministry of Tourism. The dispatching method was explained and suggestions were proffered as to the most equitable manner for future operations. The main stakeholders of the industry should have greater benefits from the industry and to this end Cabinet would ensure that all reasonable efforts are made to accomplish this. Dialogue and stakeholder meetings will continue in an effort to foster the growth of this vital sector of the economy to the satisfaction of all involved.
2.) Cabinet was brought up to date on the condition of the tourist spots around the federation with respect to the work that is being done at Black Rocks, Timothy Hill, the second phase of the STRIP enhancement and the ferry terminal renovation. Also, it was agreed that cleanup and garbage collection will be increased on the beaches from one day to two days per week.
3.) Cabinet dealt with submissions in an expeditious manner, giving high priority to infrastructure development projects.
4.) Cabinet was given an update on the RLB International Airport, which is being upgraded with an infusion of 6.7 million EC dollars. Cabinet was informed that work is continuing apace and should be completed within the next 90 days.
5.) Cabinet was updated on the plans for the 34th anniversary of Independence and considered a short list of five possible themes for Independence 2017. The theme selected was “Youth, Vision, Integrity—Securing Our Nation’s Prosperity”. The person submitting the winning slogan will be contacted by the Ministry of Education, which this year undertook to be the focal point for organizing the theme competition.
