Please be informed that World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) in which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the lead agency will be celebrated on November 10th.
WSDPD was established in 2001 by the UNESCO General Conference (Resolution 3ICl20). It is an annual event celebrated all over the world to recall the commitment made at the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science (Budapest 1999). This year’s theme is ‘science for Global Understanding’.
The purpose of the WSDPD seeks to renew the national and international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society. It also aims to raise public awareness of the importance of science, bridge the gap between science and societies and offer the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development, from government officials to the media to school pupils.
The St. Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO humbly solicits your assistance as media practitioners to spread the word about the relevance of Science in our everyday lives.
This can be done by:
1. Airing the World Day of Peace and Development Message from the Director General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova (to be forwarded).
2. Discussing the theme for this year during the daily talk shows on your radio station.
3. Including in your news package, a press release on the topic, from the St.Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO.
